What we use on the farm
We do not use weed killers, insecticides, or pesticides. Instead we use natural and alternative methods to fixing our problems that not only benefit our crops but help with waste management and bee population.
USDA Organic fertilizers
I only buy USDA certified Organic fertilizers and soil amendments.
I do not have one specific supplier for these but try to find the most cost effective one to help keep cost of “shares” down.
Raised garden beds
This allows me to control pH, nutrients, fertilizers, and over all what goes into our soil.
Compost
Most compost used comes from our natural compost piles. Occasionally we run out an need to buy Organic compost. This ensures no harsh chemicals or anything unnatural touch your food.
Mulch
We use untreated wood mulch or reusable red mulch paper. Mulch is an easy way to reduce weeds while keeping the soils warm for plant roots. It also helps keep fruit from sitting directly on the ground and rotting.
Companion planting
Companion planting is an old method used with crops that benefit one another. For example certain crops breakdown nutrients in a way that others can absorb and use. While others may provide shade or area to climb on.
Beneficial insects
Beneficial insects are those that do not damage crops but instead eat or help in pollinating the fruit flowers. For instance I plant a variety of flowers to attract bees. The bees then pollinate the fruit flowers and in return a larger healthier crop grows.
